UK Laser Hair Removal ... DIY or Professional Treatment?

We haven't got UK national averages but based on USA national averages, the cost of professional hair removal on the legs, underarms, and bikini line only is upwards of £7000-£8500 for a full course of treatments. (According to American Society of Plastic Surgeons)

For easier understanding we have converted the dollar equivalent to pounds. Treatments average upwards of £200-£700 per treatment, with most areas requiring five to eight treatments for permanent hair reduction, the size of the area, along with the amount of hair being treated, will determine the exact price.

As a rough breakdown of the cost of professional laser hair removal by treatment area:
Medium areas like the bikini line or underarms: £200-£300+ per treatment.
Larger areas like the full legs or a man's full back: £350-£650+ per treatment.** (Source: laserhairremoval.com)

What are the hair removal options? Bleaching, Shaving, Plucking, Waxing, and Sugar Waxing, Depilatories, Electrolysis

I've included bleaching to include all options but in reality it isn't really a hair removal method. It simply makes the hair look less noticeable.

Shaving: certainly the most temporary method of hair removal purely because it cuts the hair off at the skin surface. There are many myths and old wives tales relating to shaving such as making the hair thicker or darker. Some say it will grow hair faster.

Plucking the hair with tweezers is an effective way to remove it, albeit time consuming? It has to grow long enough for the tweezers to get a grip but it is fairly inexpensive and can be done at your leisure. It would appear to take longer to grow back because it has been plucked from below the skin level so has a journey to travel before being visible.

Like it or hate it, waxing is a pretty effective method of removing a large amount of hair in one quick swoosh (ouch). Exercise caution when heating wax so as not to burn the skin.

Depilatories. The term depilatory actually means 'removing the hair' and chemical products that remove hair are also often called depilatories.

A depilatory is a strong, alkaline based product and when placed on hair it slowly breaks down the hair follicle until it turns jelly-like. This process takes about 5- 10 minutes before it can be easily wiped off.

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and applying an electrical current to root thus burning the hair root and theoretically preventing it from producing more hair. Each hair follicle must be treated individually and it is likely take several treatments to destroy the follicle. Don't be surprised if you are quoted 12 to 18 months for full removal.
